What it is
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide — seven amino acids — built on tuftsin, a short naturally occurring fragment involved in immune signalling, with an added extension that makes it more stable in the body.
It was developed in Russia, as an anxiolytic.
What it was designed to do
The design goal was specific and worth stating precisely: reduce anxiety without the trade-offs that come with benzodiazepines — sedation, cognitive dulling, tolerance and dependence. It is filed here with the other compounds sold for focus and mood.
That goal is still the claim the compound is sold on. It is important to notice that a design goal is a statement of intent, not a finding. Whether Selank achieves it is exactly what evidence would have to establish, and the two get run together in almost everything written about it.
The evidence, and where it comes from
Most of the clinical literature on Selank is Russian. Independent replication in Western trials is limited.
This is a recurring pattern with compounds from this research tradition — Semax is the other obvious example, and Cerebrolysin is the third. There is a substantial home literature, often spanning decades, and very little confirmation from unconnected groups working under different incentives.
That is not the same as saying the findings are wrong. Russian peptide research is a real field with real institutions behind it. What it means is that the ordinary cross-check that gives a result its weight — someone with no stake in it finding the same thing — largely has not happened. A reader deciding how much to trust a claim is entitled to know that.
The two-jurisdiction problem
Descriptions of Selank as "an approved Russian medicine" and as "an unapproved research chemical" are both partly true, depending on which border you are standing at, and each is used selectively.
In the United States and the European Union it is not approved for any use. On the FDA's compounding page it appears among nominations withdrawn by the nominator, not on the current Category 2 list.
One honest point in its favour
Selank is usually sold as a nasal spray, and that is largely how it was studied. Intranasal delivery avoids the digestive tract and is a genuine route for peptides intended to reach the brain.
It is one of the few compounds in this library where what is sold matches the format the research used — which is a low bar, and worth noting because so much of this catalogue does not clear it.
The same claim cannot be made for noopept, the oral dipeptide from the same research tradition, whose mechanism rests on a metabolite demonstrated in rats and never detected in human plasma.
