What is it good for?

It is sold for fat loss — the word lipotropic means fat-moving, and the premise is that these nutrients help the liver process fat. That premise comes from mid-twentieth-century nutrition science about dietary deficiency, not from trials of an injection given to people who are not deficient.

Lipo-C is not a peptide, and this entry says so in its first line for the same reason the entries on NAD, on the nucleoside sold under the name AICAR and on 5-Amino-1MQ do: it is sold beside them, described alongside them, and frequently called one by the people selling it.

What is in the vial is a nutrient mixture: methionine, inositol and choline, usually with vitamin B12 added — which is where the C in most versions of the name comes from. The combination is often abbreviated MIC.

Why none of it is a peptide

A peptide is a chain: two or more amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Judged against that definition, the three ingredients fail it in three different ways.

Methionine is an amino acid — one of the twenty in the standard set. But it is a single free amino acid, and one amino acid cannot be a chain. There is no peptide bond in it, because a peptide bond requires two residues to join.

Inositol is a sugar alcohol. It contains no nitrogen in the amino-group sense and is not an amino acid.

Choline is an essential nutrient involved in building cell membranes and in making the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Also not an amino acid.

So the vial contains one amino acid, one sugar alcohol and one nutrient. There is no peptide bond anywhere in it.

Where the name comes from

Lipotropic means fat-moving, and the word is older than the injection. It comes out of mid-twentieth-century nutrition research which established that animals deprived of choline accumulate fat in the liver, and that certain dietary substances prevented this. Those substances were called lipotropic factors.

That is a real and durable observation, and it is about deficiency. It describes what goes wrong when these nutrients are absent from a diet. Whether injecting the same nutrients into someone whose diet already contains them does anything is a separate question, and it is the question the product is sold on.

The literature, counted and then read

This is the part worth doing carefully, because the naive count is off by a factor of almost five hundred.

A PubMed search for lipotropic injection returns 1,446 records. That looks like a substantial literature. Reading the most recent titles shows what it actually is: choline supplementation in chicken embryos, ionic liquid formulations for high-concentration antibody delivery, cholinergic signalling in the nematode Ascaris, metabolite datasets in chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure. The search is matching its words in unrelated contexts. None of the sampled records is about a lipotropic injection given to a person.

A search for the actual combination — methionine inositol choline injection — returns three records:

  • two papers from 1987, both on phospholipid metabolism in mouse sciatic nerve and Schwann cells;
  • one from 2022, on a signalling pathway in liver fibrosis.

None studies the injection.

The registry is the same shape. ClinicalTrials.gov held zero registrations for the three ingredients in combination on 2026-09-19. A search for lipotropic returned exactly one record, NCT00031135terminated, and studying choline chloride in parenteral-nutrition-associated liver disease. That is a deficiency setting in patients fed intravenously, which is the original lipotropic observation rather than the product's claim.

The distance between 1,446 and three is the finding. It is the same trap this library has documented on adipotide, where a registry search under the marketed name returns zero because the filing uses a development code, and on other compounds where a common word inflates a count. A total is not an evidence count until the records have been read one at a time.

Where it stands

No formulation of Lipo-C is an approved medicine. Preparations are made by compounding pharmacies and given in clinics; a compounded preparation has not been evaluated by a regulator for the use it is given for, which is a different legal position from an approved drug and a different one again from a research chemical.

The individual nutrients are well established in nutrition science. That is not in question and is not what the product claims.
